BISHOP JERRY L. MAYNARD is prelate of the Fourth Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of TN. He serves as the senior pastor of Cathedral of Praise Church of God in Christ located in Nashville, TN. After 50 years in ministry he is positively impacting lives and delivering a message across the nation encouraging people to maximize their potential.

Bishop Maynard completed graduate and postgraduate studies in Psychology and Social Sciences at Indiana University and the Doctorates Division of Cross Roads Bible College. Bishop Maynard, a native of Indiana, served as Director of the Muncie Indiana Human Rights Commission from 1967-1970, a member of the Indiana and United States Civil Rights Commission from 1970- 1981, and the President’s Domestic Policy Committee from 1977-1983. He is the recipient of the highest civilian award of the state of Indiana, “Sagamore of the Wabash.” A noted speaker, Bishop Maynard has lectured at Ball State University, Taylor University, Indiana and Indiana State Universities, Cross Roads Bible College, Clark University and keynoted the nationally known “Soul Winners” Conference.

His concern for the growth and edification of God’s people extends beyond the church. In 1997, Cathedral of Praise formerly Pentecostal Tabernacle Church began planning for the construction of the new 1800 seat Sanctuary and Worship Center. Bishop Maynard chose Church Builders United, a partnership of minority-owned contractors. In addition, minority and women-owned businesses worked as sub-contractors on the project. Bishop Maynard further insisted that the labor force be made up of a significant number of minorities. Thus, approximately eighty-percent of the laborers working on the construction of the facility were African-American and Latino. Other churches building new facilities are now patterning this model. For his efforts, and his many contributions for the establishment of entrepreneurial enterprises, Bishop Maynard received the “R. H. Boyd Business Advocate of the Year 1999” award.

COPchoir coverEvery now and then a church choir breaks through in Gospel music and causes a major buzz. Following in the tradition of the Potter’s House and New Birth Mass choirs yet forging their own path, Nashville, Tennessee’s Cathedral of Praise Church Choir is causing such a buzz in the industry. After years of being known throughout the city and faithfully serving the congregation in song every Sunday, Bishop Jerry L. Maynard felt that it was time for the world to hear what he had known for years: that his church’s choir was something special. Producer and church Music Director Phil Hughley along with partner Elvin “Kiko” Negron caught the vision of Bishop Maynard and in September 2011, under the direction of Kyla Jade, the choir recorded live. Bishop Maynard then founded Jelema Records and on November 6, 2012 released Bishop Jerry L. Maynard Presents the Cathedral of Praise Choir to a #10 debut on Billboard Top Gospel Chart.  The 16-track freshman release is a mix of live and studio songs and recently received a 2013 Dove Award Nomination for TRADITIONAL GOSPEL ALBUM of the YEAR.  The project features world-renowned worship leader Don Moen, Nia Allen (Cece Winans), Candy West (Marvin Sapp, Myron Butler), Pam Crawford (Chicago Mass, the Tommies), Durward Davis (Sunday’s Best) as well as Bishop Maynard. The lead single “Just Believe!” features Michelle Prather (Kurt Carr Singers and Kevin Davidson & the Voices) and is making a definite statement on Gospel Radio by climbing to the Top 30 Gospel Billboard charts and earning the project a second 2013 Dove Award Nomination for TRADITIONAL GOSPEL SONG OF THE YEAR.  In this first offering the choir’s mission is to not only give the listener a glimpse of what a Sunday at Cathedral of Praise might sound like, but also give worship leaders, church choirs and music departments an album full of fresh and anointed Worship service appropriate material that is as timeless as it is timely. The music industry has yet another burgeoning talent coming out of Nashville, but this time it’s many voices singing as one and they are the Cathedral of Praise Choir.
